The Miss Oak Harbor Scholarship Pageant is a 6-week program for local high schoolers. It is sponsored by Miss Oak Harbor (dba Whidbey Royalty), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.
Contestants must identify as female, be in grade 9, 10, 11, or 12, and live in or attend a school in the Oak Harbor School District.
There are two divisions: Miss Oak Harbor (Juniors & Seniors) and Teen Miss Oak Harbor (Freshmen & Sophomores). Contestants compete only against those in their division.
Applications are accepted November-January. Registration forms and additional information can be found on the CONTESTANT tab at MissOakHarbor.com.
Miss Oak Harbor contestants are asked to stretch themselves during the competition, with the first assignment being to market themselves by asking for a business sponsor. These sponsorships help involve the community in the program by bringing a variety of businesses into the pageant “family.” They also help pay for pageant expenses. Businesses that sponsor contestants are provided with many benefits that make the $300 sponsorship fee a very worthwhile investment.
No experience is necessary! The Miss Oak Harbor Scholarship Pageant is designed for everyone. It is limited to the first 20 contestants who submit completed applications.
The Miss Oak Harbor Scholarship Pageant scoring system is unique—it takes into account the whole person and incorporates 13 scoring categories, making this a pageant for everyone which anyone can win! Scoring in all of the primary categories takes place prior to pageant night, with the final pieces (Speech/Talent, Formal Wear, Stage Presence, and Impromptu Question) being scored live during the pageant.
Pageant scoring includes 13 categories with variable weighting:
* Attendance (12%) * Academics (5%)
* Board of Directors Input (11%) * Formal Wear (9%) * Service (5%)
* Personal Interview (10%) * Stage Presence (8%) * Physical Fitness (5%)
* Video Journals (10%) * Speech or Talent (5%) * Extra-curricular (5%)
* Marketing (10%) * Work (5%)
There are a number of ways to support your favorite contestant. Buy pageant or fundraising event tickets, buy greeting cards, and vote with your dollars in the People’s Choice competition.
People’s Choice is an optional competition within the Miss Oak Harbor Scholarship Pageant. As a fundraiser, this competition is completely separate from the pageant point system and has no bearing on the outcome of the overall pageant results. It does, however, provide an opportunity for the public to vote for their favorite contestant. The contestant with the most votes wins People’s Choice, receives a crown and sash, and takes home a college scholarship equivalent to half of all People’s Choice votes.
Each contestant receives a Miss Oak Harbor t-shirt and swag bag loaded with goodies. But more importantly, contestants receive coaching that will help them succeed not only in the pageant but also in life: interview, marketing, stage presence, and mentorship.
The Miss Oak Harbor Scholarship Pageant delivers thousands of dollars in scholarships every year, as well as many other awards and recognition.
The top three in each division will be named Queen, 1st Princess, and 2nd Princess and will receive a crown, sash, trophy, and scholarship. 3rd, 4th, and 5th Runners-Up in each division also receive scholarships.
Following the pageant, the newly crowned Miss Oak Harbor Royalty will begin their reign as representatives of Oak Harbor and will begin serving their community in a variety of ways. They will choose a community service project to focus on during their reign and will raise funds to support that organization.
