We’re thrilled to announce a new chapter for Whidbey Royalty! In 2027, our high school programs, Miss and Mr. Oak Harbor, are coming together under one name: the Whidbey Royalty Scholarship Competition, featuring separate girls’ and boys’ divisions.
Contestants compete and are scored separately within their respective divisions, sharing the experience, participating in the program together, and building meaningful connections, while sharing seven weeks of mentorship, coaching, community service, and personal growth. They’ll build confidence, strengthen leadership and communication skills, form lasting friendships, and compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships and awards.
Open to students in grades 9–12 who live in or attend school within the Oak Harbor School District, this is an annual scholarship and personal development program centered on mentorship, leadership, community service, and personal growth. More than a competition, this is an opportunity to discover your potential, make a difference in your community, and invest in your future—it is NOT a beauty pageant. You don't have to be the most outgoing person in the room or have everything figured out. You just need to be willing to learn, grow, challenge yourself, and discover what you're capable of!
No experience is necessary! This competition is designed for everyone. Contestants must be in grade 9, 10, 11, or 12, and live in or attend a school in the Oak Harbor School District. Each division (girls & boys) is limited to the first 15 contestants who submit completed applications.
Applications are accepted December-January. Registration forms and additional information can be found on the SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION tab at WhidbeyRoyalty.org. Download the form, complete it, save it on your computer, then attach it to an email to WhidbeyRoyalty@gmail.com.
The scoring system takes into account the whole person and incorporates 13 scoring categories with variable weighting, making this a competition for everyone which anyone can win! Scoring in all of the primary categories takes place prior to pageant night, with the final pieces (Talent and Formal Wear) being scored live during competition night.
Competition scoring includes 13 categories with variable weighting:
Attendance (12%) Personal Interview (9%) Academics (5%)
Marketing (12%) Platform/Cause Presentation (8%) Service (5%)
Video Journals (11%) Formal Wear (7%) Physical Fitness (5%)
Board of Directors Input (11%) Talent (5%) Extra-curricular (5%)
Work (5%)
Each contestant receives a t-shirt and swag bag loaded with goodies. But more importantly, contestants receive mentorship and coaching that will help them succeed not only in the competition but also in life: interviewing, public speaking, marketing, and stage presence.
The competition delivers thousands of dollars in scholarships every as well as many other awards and lots of recognition.
The girls' division has two age groups (Miss & Teen) with the top three in each age group being named Queen, 1st Princess, and 2nd Princess. The top three in the boys' division are named King, 1st Prince, and 2nd Prince, and the next three fill out the Mister Court. The Royals receive a crown, sash/stole, and scholarship. 3rd and 4th Runners-Up in each division also receive scholarships.
There are a number of ways to support your favorite contestant. Buy competition or fundraising event tickets or fundraising items, and vote with your dollars in the People’s Choice competition.
People’s Choice is an optional competition within the Scholarship Competition. As a fundraiser, this contest is completely separate from the competition point system and has no bearing on the outcome of the overall competition results. It does, however, provide an opportunity for the public to vote for their favorite contestant. The contestant with the most votes in each division wins People’s Choice, receives a crown and sash/stole, and takes home a college scholarship equivalent to half of all People’s Choice votes for that division.
Contestants are asked to stretch themselves during the competition, with the first assignment being to market themselves by asking for a business sponsor. These sponsorships help involve the community in the program by bringing a variety of businesses into the Whidbey Royalty “family.” They also help pay for competition expenses. Businesses that sponsor contestants are provided with many benefits that make the $350 sponsorship fee a very worthwhile investment. If a contestant needs help finding a sponsor, we are happy to get them connected with a business.
